Supermarket Need

Nathaniel Lichfield and Partners undertook a Retail Assessment on behalf of Oswestry Borough Council which identified a requirement for a new supermarket.

It found that Oswestry retains 67% of convenience goods spending from the town’s core catchment and only 43% from the wider area and there is overtrading in Oswestry’s existing food stores.

The report also highlighted that failure to secure a new retail development would result in continued expenditure leakage from Oswestry to other competing towns, increasing the length of car-based shopping trips. It predicts that further congestion in shops and stores during peak periods will also encourage residents to shop outside of the Borough.
