Transport
This scheme will deliver a traffic neutral impact (i.e. no discernable effect on local roads)...
...but investment will also improve the safety and operational performance of the roads.
The key elements of the improvements include:
The signalisation of the Gobowen Road junction with Whittington Road, including the banning of the ahead and right turn movement from Whittington Road.
The existing priority controlled junction of Whittington Road with Unicorn Road will be replaced with a double roundabout arrangement which will improve the existing operational performance of the junction whilst providing an access point to the site.
The scheme will facilitate the extension to the Old Fort Road 20mph zone to reduce vehicular speeds and rat running through residential streets used by school children to access Woodside School, and land purchased to provide new off street residents parking along Whittington Road.
Sustainable travel planning:
- The site is on the edge of the town centre with a safe, off road, five minute walk to the town along the heritage railway line
- £150,000 will be invested in the subsidised town centre town centre bus service
- The site is less than a five minute walk to the bus station offering ease of access to the town's 27 bus routes
- Improved pedestrian and cycle access to a range of local amenities (medical centre, former railway station, bus station, Shelf Bank, residential areas, schools and the existing and proposed local cycleways of eastern Oswestry)
- Currently a high proportion of local people are driving away from Oswestry to shop. More choice will retain local shoppers and reduce driving distances
